The Tampere University of Technology Gamification Group is looking for 1-3 researchers on gamification, AR/VR/MR, or eSports. Depending on the background of the selected candidate(s), the position can be either Postdoctoral Researcher, Doctoral Student or Project Researcher. Work is mainly composed of research-related activities including conducting empirical research, writing articles, acquiring (or assisting in acquiring) further funding and co-organizing seminars and other events related to research projects and the candidate’s research topic. However, the job description also includes a smaller portion of teaching-related activities, especially establishing a course related to gamification, VR/AR/MR and related topics and teaching on the course. Moreover, depending on the research project, the candidate is expected to interact with the society and industry. The position is strongly research-focused on all levels.

Postdoctoral Researcher/Doctoral Student/Project Researcher (Gamification/VR/AR/MR/eSports), 1-3 positions

Pursuing excellence, The Faculty of Computing and Electrical Engineering is an international, diverse and multidisciplinary community of researchers and students. The topical research covers the essential ingredients of building the future digital society with solutions that are groundbreaking and designed understanding the human needs. The outcome of the basic research in software design and systems, signal processing, communications engineering and networking, computer science, electrical engineering, and power engineering finds its applications in many forefronts of society, ICT, industrial intelligent machines, healthcare, consumer solutions and so forth. The Gamification Group under Associate Professor Juho Hamari belongs to the Laboratory of Pervasive Computing within the Faculty of Computing and Electrical Engineering. Gamification Group’s research covers several forms of information technologies such as games, gamification, game-based learning, persuasive technologies, social networking services, online video streaming, eSports, sharing economy, crowdsourcing and virtual economies. GG has published several seminal empirical, theoretical and meta-analytical scholarly articles from perspective of consumer behavior, human-computer interaction, game studies and information systems science. GG is the most internationally published research group especially on the topic of gamification, but pursues several topics related to games and novel information technologies. Job description

The Tampere University of Technology Gamification Group is looking for 1-3 researchers. Depending on the primary topic (gamification in various domains, AR/VR/MR, eSports) of the candidate(s), the research will be positioned in different research projects within the Gamification Group. Depending on the background of the selected candidate(s), the position can be either Postdoctoral Researcher, Doctoral Student or Project Researcher. In all these positions the work is mainly composed of research-related activities including conducting empirical research, writing articles, acquiring (or assisting in acquiring) further funding and co-organizing seminars and other events related to research projects and the candidate’s research topic. However, the job description also includes a smaller portion of teaching-related activities, especially establishing a course related to gamification, VR/AR/MR and related topics and teaching on the course. Moreover, depending on the research project, the candidate is expected to interact with the society and industry. The position is strongly research-focused on all levels.

Emphases depending on the level:
In Doctoral Student/Project Researcher position the candidate will work as a member of research team and will be supervised by senior members of the group. In the position of Doctoral Student, the job consists of research activities related to the applicant’s research plan that aim towards completion of a PhD degree and publications in prestigious conferences/journals.
In Postdoctoral Researcher position the candidate will work more independently, collaborate with the colleagues and project partners, supervise PhD and MSc students and seek funding from international sources.

Requirements:

Postdoctoral Researcher: The successful candidate must hold a relevant doctoral degree. The successful candidate should possess relevant research experience, competence to conduct independent scientific work and experience in publishing in scientific journals. Experience of studying and working abroad and contacts to international research is appreciated.

Doctoral Student/Project Researcher: The successful candidate must hold a Master’s degree or be close to completion of their degree.

Doctoral Student: The recruited candidate must either already be enrolled or enroll in a doctoral programme at TUT. The research conducted within the project may be utilized towards the completion of a doctoral dissertation.

The positions require proficiency in English, both written and spoken.

The following qualities are appreciated:
– Background in some of the following areas or on a closely related one: Computer science (especially HCI), psychology, information systems science, marketing, health –related sciences
– Prior knowledge of either gamification, game research, VR/AR/MR or eSports
– Experience and/or knowledge in quantitative research methods (including e.g. setting up experiments, survey research, quantitative data analysis)
– Experience in game design / HCI design / web design.

Salary:

The salary will be based on both the job demands and the employee’s personal performance in accordance with the University Salary System. According to the criteria applied to teaching and research staff, the position of Postdoctoral Researcher is placed on the job demands levels 5-6, the position of Doctoral Student on levels 1-4 and the position of Project Researcher on levels 2-4. In addition, employees receive performance based salary.

Trial period:

The appointment is subject to the satisfactory completion of a trial period of four months.

Other:

The position will be filled for a fixed term period of two years. The commencement date will be as soon as possible, as mutually agreed.
