Researching Gamification: Strategies, Opportunities, Challenges, Ethics

Sebastian Deterding (contact)

Dr. Sebastian Deterding is an assistant professor for game design at the Playable Innovative Technologies Lab of Northeastern University, lead organizer of the Gamification Research Network, and co-editor of The Gameful World (MIT Press, 2014). He has been the leading organizing committee member of three CHI workshops: Gamification (2011), Social Game Studies at CHI (2011), and Designing Gamification (2013).

Seth Cooper

Seth Cooper is an assistant professor in the College of Computer and Information Science at Northeastern University. He is the chief architect and lead designer of Foldit, a video game that has allowed hundreds of thousands of players to contribute to biochemical scientific research. He is currently working on games with applications in a variety of fields, from nanotechnology to software verification. He has also developed game technologies for real-time crowd simulation and character control.

Alessandro Canossa

Dr. Alessandro Canossa is an Associate Professor within the College of Arts, Media and Design at Northeastern University. His current work employs psychological theories of personality, motivation and emotion to design interactive scenarios with the purpose of investigating individual differences in behavior.

Lennart E. Nacke

Dr. Nacke is an assistant professor and director of the HCI Games group at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology. He chaired the conferences Gamification 2013 and CHI PLAY 2014 and has been on the program committees of over a dozen HCI and game research conferences, including CHI, ACE, GI, FDG and DiGRA.

Casper Harteveld

Casper Harteveld is an assistant professor of game design at Northeastern University, and author of Triadic Game Design (Springer, 2011), a book about serious game design. His research focuses on using games to learn about decision-making, and educating people in making better decisions through games.

Jennifer R. Whitson

Jennifer Whitson is an assistant professor in Sociology & Legal Studies at Waterloo University. An ethnographer and surveillance studies theorist, her current projects center on the game industry and the surveillance implications of data-driven design. With Bart Simon, she edited a Special Issue of Surveillance & Society on Games, Play and Surveillance.
